Philosophy of Doctor ( Ph.D. ) Programme

Overview

  • D. degree is the additional higher recognised research degree in physical education, after the completion of which the candidate will get professional recognition as well as other benefits.
  • The Ph.D. Program shall consist of a combination of Course work (Part A) and Research work (Part B).
  • D. (Physical Education) scholars are required to complete the course work consisting of 18 credits at the Research Centre.

Eligibility

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed for those belonging to reserved categories/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per policies of the Government of Maharashtra prescribed from time to time.
  • A person whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme of the same institution.
  • Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian institution, from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

Admission Procedure

All admissions for Ph.D. programmes shall be through an Entrance Test (PET) conducted by the University of Mumbai.

  • Candidates qualified in UGC-NET (Including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (Including JRF)/SLET/GATE (valid score) or teacher fellowship holders will be exempted from the Entrance Test for M.Phil./Ph.D. Programmes.
  • Candidates who have passed M. Phil. Programme of the any recognized University will be exempted from the Entrance Test for Ph.D. programme.

The Research Centres of University of Mumbai shall admit candidates by a Two Stage Process through

  • Entrance Test (PET Conducted by University):100 marks (100 questions of one mark each with multiple choice) with 50% marks as qualifying marks. (50% based on research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific).
  • An Interview organized by the Research Centre when the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Department Research Committee.

Duration of Programme

The duration of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) shall be of minimum 03 years. The programme shall be conducted on regular/part time basis. The maximum duration for the completion is 5 years.
